Kaizer Chiefs' struggle to secure a top-eight finish this season, coupled with another year without silverware, has sparked critical observations from former Amakhosi and Bafana Bafana striker, Katlego "Killer" Mphela.

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Mphela, whose illustrious career also includes stints at Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United, pointed to deficiencies in player quality and recruitment strategies as key factors behind Chiefs' underwhelming performances.

Mphela candidly expressed his views on the current squad's capabilities, suggesting that the players might not live up to the high expectations set by the club's storied history.

"I think Chiefs should change the way they recruit these players. They are not as good as they make them believe. You know I am saying this because it's the players who play and not the coach. So if they are good players then they should be able to change results in a game. Whether they are winning or losing they should be in control because they are good players. But I don't think they are that good. I think the club should change a lot of the players next season. Chiefs is a big team and need players who can stand for that magnitude of a club and not be swept away by the pressure that comes with playing for Chiefs. They have to be really good," Mphela stated to the Siya crew, emphasizing the need for a squad capable of handling the pressures associated with playing for a club of Chiefs' stature.

Furthermore, Mphela highlighted the importance of a robust scouting department, suggesting that Chiefs could learn from Sundowns' approach to player recruitment.

"I think they should also look at the scouting team. That's where Sundowns beat them. Sundowns know the players which will suit their system, culture and philosophy. If Chiefs can go back to what and how they used to scout in the past then some of the problems will be solved. The scouting team should be spot on," he added to Soccer Laduma, pointing out the critical role of scouting in building a competitive team.

Mphela's insights shed light on the challenges facing Chiefs as they aim to rebuild and return to their former glory. His comments suggest a need for a comprehensive review of the club's recruitment strategy, focusing on attracting players who not only possess the requisite skill but also the mental fortitude to thrive under the immense expectations at Naturena.

As Chiefs look to the future, revisiting their scouting and recruitment processes could be key to assembling a squad capable of competing at the highest levels and ending their trophy drought.
